Richmond triple premiership player Bachar Houli has completed a successful return to footy, playing his first minutes since the 2020 Grand Final in Saturday’s VFL practice match against Collingwood at Punt Road Oval.
The calf injury which Houli picked up late last year lingered throughout pre-season, with the Tigers opting to take a cautious approach with the important defender.
Maurice Rioli Jnr impressed playing in midfield and kicked a goal as he eyes an AFL debut later in the season.
Collingwood took a 14-point lead into half time before being pegged back to lead by just seven with a quarter remaining, but the Tigers then kicked the first three goals of the final term, taking control of match to eventually run out 28-point winners.

The Essendon Bombers spent the entire trade period in 2019 flying evasive manoeuvres trying to keep hold of Joe Daniher, only to drop him cold and take the early compensation pick in 2020 free agency, ironically at the same value of Carlton’s pick from 2019 that caused such dramas for Sydney and the Gold Coast.
On the first day of the second trade window, the Bombers landed a home-grown replacement for Daniher in Peter Wright for a mere fourth-rounder, which could well turn out to be the most underrated move of the entire 2020 horse-trading period.

Richmond will be aim to be patient and take a careful approach with injured ruckman Ivan Soldo.
The 2019 premiership big man missed this seasonâs flag after he ruptured both his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial ligament in the round 17 win over Geelong.
Soldo underwent surgery to address the injury but will not begin running for some time and is unlikely to be back on the field for the Tigers until late next season.
The clubâs Physical Performance Manager, Peter Burge, says it will be a slow and steady pathway for the 24-year-old.

An AFL draft that delivered a low number of list spots, the 2020 edition still proved a marathon event – and one dominated by club academy prospects. Wednesday night’s action did not kick off until almost 7.30pm and the first round alone dragged out to 26 selections and almost two hours amid matched academy bids and draft-night trades.
