2021 legislative recap: UHʻs overall budget cut by 10% | University of Hawaiʻi System News

Kalbert Young, UH vice president for budget and finance and chief financial officer, shares his analysis of the Hawaiʻi State Legislature 2021 session. The 2021 Legislature adjourned on April 29, after passing more than 260 bills, which the governor will now consider for enactment. Some of these bills will impact the University of Hawaiʻi either directly or indirectly. This was the first year of the Legislature’s biennium (two-year cycle). Latest developments: • State Department of Health on Thursday reported 122 new cases statewide as of 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, including 79 on Oahu, 26 on Maui, six on Kauai, four on Hawaii island and seven residents diagnosed out of state. • There have now been 32,232 cases statewide, including 24,749 on Oahu, 3,519 in Maui County (3,371 on Maui, 111 on Lanai and 37 on Molokai), 2,687 on Hawaii island and 231 on Kauai. A total of 1,046 residents have been diagnosed out of state. • DOH reported one new death on Thursday, a Kauai woman in her 70s with underlying conditions who had been hospitalized. • There have now been 483 fatalities statewide, including 374 on Oahu, 53 on Hawaii island, 51 on Maui, two on Kauai and three residents who died out of state.

Latest developments: • State Department of Health on Sunday reported 111 new cases statewide, including 93 on Oahu, 10 on Maui, six on Hawaii island and two residents diagnosed out of state. • There have now been 31,381 cases statewide, including 24,134 on Oahu, 3,393 in Maui County (3,247 on Maui, 111 on Lanai and 35 on Molokai), 2,642 on Hawaii island and 200 on Kauai. A total of 1,012 residents have been diagnosed out of state. • No new deaths were reported; there remain 474 fatalities statewide, including 370 on Oahu, 53 on Hawaii island, 47 on Maui, one on Kauai and three residents who died out of state. • Maui Health will begin offering Moderna vaccines for all first-dose appointments at its Grand Wailea clinic starting Wednesday. Residents who received their first Pfizer dose at the clinic can still receive their second Pfizer dose at the same site.
