“When you have a major capital investment in a community, you want to be able to go in and look after all of your educational facilities at one time so you don’t have to make that major capital investment again for another 50 years,” he said. For MUCC, this would result in a new expansion onto the collegiate to consolidate two to five schools as well as a modernization renovation for the school. Rempel said its likely Maude Burke, the newest school, would stay, while the other elementary schools would be consolidated into a new elementary school by the high school.

After conversations began in mid-December regarding Melfort’s Heavy Truck Route, more residents are voicing their concerns over the route, mainly relating to Broadway Avenue South.
At the city’s council meeting on Monday, Jan. 11, several residents voiced their concerns about heavy duty vehicles travelling down the road.
One letter said the semi traffic going by their house on Broadway Ave. South has “dramatically increased”, over the years and that “90 per cent of the heavy trucks are grain trucks.” They added there are upwards of 50 trucks that make their way down that route on a day-to-day basis, sometimes more during harvest. The letter also stated the changes in the area since the road was deemed a Heavy Truck Route, including residential development in the ’80s.

Melfort’s Heavy Truck Route was a big topic of conversation on Monday at the city’s Regular Council Meeting.
The issue came via a letter from a Melfort resident who brought forth the concern about heavy trucks using Broadway Avenue South. The complainant had a couple of reasons for the concern including the condition of the street continues to deteriorate, and that the route goes right passed Maude Burke School. The route is part of Melfort’s Heavy Truck Route as it does connect to Highway 41.

A letter to the city council from Melfort citizen Lorne Larson was brought to the Dec. 14 meeting. Larson reported that speeding is a problem on that street and would like to see more done to alleviate the problem. The condition of Broadway Avenue South is also questionable given its usage as a heavy truck route. Broadway Avenue South from Saskatchewan Drive to Wesley Street is an option for the 2021 Capital Utility Budget, reported Gerald Gilmore, director of works and utilities. Broadway Avenue North was paved last year given its poor condition, he said. Larson would like to see the designation of the route changed given the heavy truck and dangerous good road runs past a school. However, Gilmore recommended to the council that they keep Broadway Avenue as a heavy truck route but they will be talking with representatives from Maude Burke to see if there are traffic issues with heavy trucks.
