used to be a flight attendant and eyebrow threader but apparently boasted to his patients that he worked extensively with the victims of 9/11 and their families. right now, police are trying to track down all of the patients who he treated so if you were under his care, they want you to come forward. reporting on staten island, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. developing on staten island now, a shootout with an armed suspect [ pause ] [ no audio ] reporter: up until the last minute there was some reason to believe that garland tyree would surrender but as you may be able to tell from all the bull markets over there, police say the wanted man died shooting straight at them. at noon. police moved in on 38-year-old garland tyree. he walked out of his home fired this loaded assault rifle according to police after refusing to be taken alive on a probation violation warrant. loved ones were hysterical as the wanted gang member died in a barrage of police gunfire. the standoff began at
an explosion underground so strong it shattered glass. a manhole fire in the middle of manhattan ties up traffic for hours. i m alice gainer. maurice and kristine are off. the fire overnight. dave carlin has more for us. reporter: on west 45th street at 9th avenue right now where the con ed workers are, they have been toiling in the heated, smoky conditions for going on 12 hours now and the machine you can see right now connected to the truck vacuums out the water and the debris out of the man whole where the blast was, heated situation for the workers and also a super heated situation for drivers ever since the explosion. suddenly i take a video and a really big explosion. reporter: the 12 seconds wallop. her camera rolling, and after the fire ball roars out of the ground, you can hear breaking glass. whoa! reporter: this is the cracked window, five floors up, and over here a schoolyard fire hydrant which was struck by the manhole cover. cover just boom, came off
claimed this stretch of lexington avenue near grand central because there is a lot of traffic and a security camera nearby. and she says she feels safer here than in a shelter. i have issues. i work in midtown so it s pretty bad. reporter: most new yorkers we interviewed today told us they see more homeless on the streets. i m not used to seeing so many homeless people. i tend to give money. reporter: some give money or food. others call 311. but today city officials are pushing back after reports that the number of 311 calls about the homeless jumped from 12,700 last year to more than 20,000 calls for the same time period this year. mayor de blasio spokeswoman says since the city has been publicizing their new 311 app, 311 calls about all subjects are up. and that the percentage of calls about the homeless is still relatively small, and unchanged. city officials insist, street homelessness is actually down 5% since last year and they say that perception of homele
