Have been lost as a result of all of that. The biggest blizzard though turned out to be inside the New York Stock Exchange today. Well put. Take a look at whats happening in the market. We are geared up for a negative start then got a flurry of earnings. Caterpillar disappointing. Microsoft didnt help thing. Both stocks getting hit hard. Whats interesting, thats contributing to the dow being a weaker performer than the s p today. Its off 231 points. The s p mean while down less than 1 . So you could argue perhaps its an oversized reaction to a couple big companies, but by the way, theyre important companies, and by the way, the nasdaq also off 1. 3 . If we get a moment could we see crude oil settled higher. We did see a comeback in that sector and energy was one of the leaders to the upside in an otherwise down day. Crude oil was up 2 . It was up 3 in the settlement. Were in the electronic trading right now. In fact, i will just point out, the aaa Daily National average gasoline gauge
And hello again, everybody. Welcome to the closing bell. Im mandy drury sitting in for maria bartiromo. Happy boxing day as well. Christmas is over but mandy has been celebrating boxing day all day. We didnt get any presents from lawmakers in washington yet. Were still five days away from falling off the proverbial fiscal cliff and wall street, like everybody else, is waiting for some kind of a solution here, and as you can see by todays numbers the waiting game continues, although we thank Brian Sullivan and you, mandy, for bringing us back to positive territory in the last hour. Im not sure we can take credit but well take it. The dow is up a fraction at the moment. 13,139 after a meandering much of the day. The nasdaq hardest hit today. Technology has been very volatile recently. Still down a fraction right now. 13 points, fraction percentagewise and the s p is down 3. 33 at 1423. Five days left until the fiscal cliff deadline, and though the market has been very resilient to this p
Nationalistic rhetoric in russia. At the same time, of course, we have a top commentator talking about nuking america and yet there are some who say the russian market is too cheap to pass up. Well look at that. Well look at the investigators, the russian etf trading under the symbol rsx. Its down 23 just this year, but as youre saying, weve seen the russian market bounce back today about a 5 gain on the rtf. Well look at that. Also deja vu all over again for housing. Adjustable rate mortgages are apparently back in vogue even in this low Interest Rate environment. Very counterintuitive. Some experts warn it is a new ticking time bomb thats sure to go off in a few years when rates are inevitably likely to go higher than they are right now. Well have a full report on these new mortgages coming out right now. And so the Dow Jones Industrial average adding 180 points today. The nasdaq adding about 40, almost 1 there. Same for the s p 500 which is up 18 points. Pretty much across the board
Good to see you both. See you later. 15 seconds left heading towards the close, off the highs of the day but a new fiveyear high for the dow and we wait for apple an netflix numbers. We get those numbers right here on the second hour of the closing bell. Welcome to the closing bell. Im Michelle Carusocabrera in for Maria Bartiromo who is on assignment from davos, switzerland. The Dow Jones Industrial average is higher by 66 points, 13,778. The nasdaq higher by 10. 5. 3153. S p higher by two. Look at that. Getting close to 1500 at 1494. Dont forget, we are moments away from both netflix and apple earnings. First though lets get the latest on todays market movers. Yeah. We got back with us again Michael Pento of pento portfolio strategies. Also with us right now is kneel henessey from the henessey funds and
Oslo, norway, very expensive city, a pack of smokes governments 15 bucked and number three, sydney, a bottle of table wine will cost you 25 which is a disgrace considering how much wine we produce and the runner up osaka, japan, where a dinner for four costs you 950. Worlds most expensive city, tokyo, loaf of bread, 9. 60. Thanks for watching street signs, everybody. Closing bell is next. Hi, everybody. We enter the final stretch. Welcome to the closing bell. Im embroemo at the New York Stock Exchange. This market trying to finish and retake that 14,000 level, not so fast. Were coming back here. Im bill griffith. A seesaw day so far, the markets february volatility does continue and setting up to be an interesting final hour of trade, this being the most important hour of the day. As weve noted well be watching to see if dow 14,000 is in the cards over the next 60 minutes here. Also in the show, hewlettpackard. Is it really exploring a breakup . Ive got my questions here.
