Ljubljana – The opposition Left filed on Wednesday criminal complaints against the ruling Democrats (SDS) and “its media network” for suspicion of a systemic spread of non-truths, leader of the Left’s deputy group Matej T. Vatovec said. The party also pressed charges against Police Commissioner Anton Olaj for suspicion of abuse of office.
The Left believes the SDS is one of the main drivers of the spread of hatred and intolerance, which is nearing a critical point in society.
“The SDS’s actions go beyond all limits that we still deem basic fundamental frameworks of democracy,” Vatovec told today’s press conference, adding that this had been reflected in recent months in the SDS’s attacks on the opposition, including the Left.

Ljubljana – The Justice Committee unanimously adopted on Wednesday amendments to the penal code redefining sexual violence. Judges, prosecutors and lawyers had opposed the changes, saying there is nothing wrong with the existing legislation. But MPs sided with the organisations which work with victims of sex crimes.
Under the changes, rape will no longer have to involve force, as the changes incriminate interference in sexual integrity without consent.
Under the changes filed by the opposition based on a proposal from NGOs, those involved must express consent to the sexual act either implicitly or verbally.
MP for the opposition Left Matej T. Vatovec said the proposed changes were the result of a long campaign and battle of organisations dealing with victims of sexual violence.

Ljubljana – Coalition deputy group leaders have collected 47 signatures from MPs to urge National Assembly Speaker Igor Zorčič to step down. SDS deputy group leader Danijel Krivec said on Wednesday that should Zorčič not decide to resign by the start of next week, they will formally file a second motion to dismiss him.
Apart from the coalition SDS, SMC and NSi MPs, MPs from the opposition SNS and DeSUS plus both minority MPs have signed the initiative.
The first attempt to dismiss Zorčič after he quit the coalition SMC group to go independent failed on 30 March as only 45 voted for the dismissal, one too few.
