Announcing the 2021 Writers Awards Ceremony

Email Address This spring, n+1 announced the establishment of the Anthony Veasna So Fiction Prize, a new $5,000 award named in memory of our contributor and beloved short story writer Anthony Veasna So. Today, we’re pleased to announce the inaugural prize winner, Trevor Shikaze, as well as the recipient of this year’s n+1 Writers’ Fellowship, Christina Nichol.   On Wednesday, May 26, we’ll be celebrating Trevor and Christina’s outstanding work and commemorating Anthony with a virtual reading and awards ceremony, hosted by  New Yorker staff writer Elif Batuman. Join us at 7:30 EST via Zoom for the 2021 n+1 Writers Awards Ceremony and find ticketing information here.

Bevins Mounts ‘Uprising’ for Priddle For PublicAffairs, Vincent Bevins’s Uprisings. Rob McQuilkin at Massie & McQuilkin sold the nonfiction title, which, the publisher said, is “a global survey of the modern era of populist uprisings from Brazil to the Arab Spring to the unrest in Hong Kong.” Bevins’s The Jakarta Method, about CIA interventions in several international conflicts, was also published by PublicAffairs; it was named one of the best books of 2020 by NPR. With a six-figure preempt, Claire Kohda’s Woman, Eating for HarperVia. The debut novel, set for spring 2022, was sold in a North American rights agreement by Sam Copeland at London’s RCW Literary Agency. Parsons described the work as a “literary vampire novel” that is “Ottessa Moshfegh meets My Sister, the Serial Killer meets Twilight.” It follows an intern named Lydia who, Parsons explained, is living on her own, in London, for the first time. Away from her vampire mother, lonely, and hungry (subsisting on a diet of hard-to-secure pig blood), Lydia must “reconcile the conflicts within her between her demon and human sides, her mixed ethnic heritage, and her relationship with food and, in turn, humans if she is to find a way to exist in the world.” Kohda is a book reviewer who has written for the

Book Deals: Week of December 21, 2020

In a world rights agreement, Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren sold a title to Metropolitan Books. John Sterling, an editor-at-large at the Macmillan imprint, acquired Persist from Robert Barnett and Daniel Martin at Williams & Connolly. The book, Holt said, will cover “six experiences and perspectives that have influenced Warren’s life and advocacy.” A portion of the author’s proceeds will go to charities in Massachusetts.
