Your Turn: HB 1775 does great harm and no real good, but here s how Stitt can make amends

How damaging is House Bill 1775, the Oklahoma law banning teaching “Critical Race Theory ? Here s a sampling:
Oklahoma state schools Superintendent Joy Hofmeister says she is “troubled by the message this bill sends, especially at a time when we’re preparing to observe the centennial of such a tragic and horrific event in our state’s history.”
The University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University have announced their student diversity trainings can no longer remain mandatory under House Bill 1775 signed into law by Gov. Kevin Stitt on May 7.
During an 18-hour span, a white mob attacked residents, homes and businesses in the predominantly Black Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands left homeless.

Viola Fletcher was seven-years-old when racist whites unleashed their deadly wrath on the Oklahoma city in June 1921. She celebrated her milestone birthday on May 5, and her special day was also acknowledged by the Greenwood community on Monday.
Speaking to Oklahoma State University’s Oral History Research Program in 2014, Fletcher said her secret to longevity was “Sleeping and eating and exercising. It’s no problem with me.”
As theGrio previously reported, many died and thousands of Black residents were injured during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre after angry white mobs attacked the area once known as ‘Black Wall Street.’
Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission Member Resigns After Gov. Stitt Signs HB1775
A member of the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission has resigned as some call for Governor Kevin Stitt’s removal from the Commission.
Oklahoma representative Monroe Nichols (D-Tulsa) made it very clear he’s proud of the work the commission has done, but he said Stitt’s signing of House Bill 1775 was just a step too far.
House Bill 1775 limits race and gender curriculum taught from kindergarten to college.
