INA S INSIGHTS/OPINION: Drivers licenses for undocumented workers
Ina Michele Resnikoff
In Spanish, “Cosecha” translates to “harvest.” Immediately, we get a sense of action and hope in the organization’s great efforts to secure equal protection under the law for undocumented workers.
Currently, a bill intended to grant drivers’ licenses to Massachusetts residents who are not citizens (S2641) sits in the the Senate Ways and Means Committee of the Massachusetts Legislature.
Interestingly, this estimated group of between 41,000 to 78,000 potential eligible drivers comprises a majority of the very frontline workers we extol over for their courage and dedication in going to work every day despite COVID-19. Yet, there remains great resistance to making this simple, albeit partial, solution to transportation for workers available.
