Adding insult to injury. Rape survivors are being billed even after being treated with rape kits, something thats not supposed to happen. A cbs news investigation found that in 13 states, including maryland, rape survivors are getting bills months and months after taking a rape kit. The bills are for tests not directly associated with the kits. For example, er visits, ambulance rides, h. I. V. Tests and followup care. Maryland hospitals are not supposed to bill for costs related to the forensic exam, but the state owe lition against sexual coalition against Sexual Assault says there is confusion. A large portions of the cases they work are to resolve billing issues. One victim spoke but didnt want to show her face about the issue.
