Former Hopkinsville City Councilman Wesley “Tag” Mabry has died at the age of 97. Lamb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mabry was a World War II veteran who worked as an accountant in Hopkinsville before embarking on a career with the Internal Revenue Service. During his time in Washington D.C., Mabry was involved in the IRS part of the Watergate investigation. After retiring from the IRS in 1981, he was a councilman from 1986-96 serving as mayor pro-tem and as chairman of the audit and finance committee.
Mabry told longtime Kentucky New Era columnist Mary D. Ferguson that he got his nickname “Tag” from the comic strip ‘Freckles and Friends’ because he always tagged along with other family members.
