well i didn t grow up, here, as a member of the indian tribe, i am proud to be connected to these lands and a diverse alaskan community that lives here. it s so good in. here it s nice and warm. that mobile is in the shape of the eye of awareness. i am so proud to meet with mary portola. a woman who has made history as the first alaska native serving in the united states congress. has it feel to be the first alaska native congresswoman? it s surprising to realize our state as old as it is. and we haven t had a person and our congressional delegation who s elected basket native. is there anything your daughter has said? something that s made you feel extra proud? i was in the minneapolis
native americans still here but we are doing extraordinary things, we are contributing to all sectors of the society and not just for our people but for all americans ask representative mary portola is representing the great state of alaska. i think it s interesting point you made, that on this show, we certainly cover this story. but, in teaching, you are right. people can probably give you some factoids about native americans in the 19th century, the 20th century, but everything that is happened in the last hundred years is probably lost on a whole lot of people. it really is, and it s not being taught in schools. so that s why so many conversations we talk now about what can and can t be taught in schools is so important. and that is one of another reasons why we decided to do the american genocide podcast on the native american born in history of united states. because the majority of americans never learn about it in school. and it is a really, really, violent, horrific, chapt

voting, in which voters rank their preferred candidates in order. since no candidate got more than 50% of the vote in these races, it went to an instant runoff where the candidates with the fewest votes were eliminated. their votes went to the next candidate choices, until a winner was announced. in the case of alaska s single house seat, this brings an end to erase that feature the state s former governor, and a republican who is running for the seat. the result, also the second set victory this year, for democrat mary portola who first when this house seat in an august special election, and served the remaining term of don young, who dwight died in office. joining us now, congresswoman-elect mary peltola of alaska, thank you so much for taking the time to be with us. first, your reaction to your winter night? hi, alicia. it just feels so good that it s over, over seven months of this campaign, two campaigns.
