To get shots into every arm, Berkshire vaccines go mobile

“We need pens,” someone calls out. “Where are the pens?” The vaccinators have been readying themselves for the past hour, rushing to fill the van with syringes, signs and doses of the Moderna vaccine. The details still are coming together at the last possible moment as the van pulls up in a church parking lot ringed by white blossoms. Scribes grab clipboards and pull on jackets before they head outside, where several cars already have pulled in for the Friday morning clinic. Zenani Santos, 19, waits in one of those cars. Santos, one of just over a dozen people registered for this site, describes herself as “in the middle” on the vaccine enthusiasm scale.

Provisions in relief bill could alleviate child poverty, hunger in Berkshires

NORTH ADAMS — The economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic has put nearly 1 in 4 Berkshire County children at risk of hunger, but observers see more federal money for parents as a win for children’s nutrition. President Joe Biden has said the $1.9 trillion COVID relief plan he is expected to sign this week would cut child poverty in half, a claim that researchers haveechoed. Locally, there is hope that the extra money will stem the tide of rising food insecurity among children, in addition to meeting needs related to housing, heat and electricity. “I think [the relief payments] will really help families, but it’s not a long-term fix,” said Michelle Derr, director of the Berkshire South Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program for Community Health Programs in Great Barrington.
