Martin County is spending $5 million to demolish the old station and build a new one on the same site. The new station is expected to be finished by September 2022.
When it was built in the 1980s, Station 18 served only volunteer firefighters, and wasn t meant to be staffed around the clock. Eventually, it began housing paid personnel.
Now, the county has outgrown the station and it was beyond the point of repair, Napoli said. The Fire Rescue department also has grown over the years. The hazardous-materials unit had been based in Station 18, but there no longer was enough space for all its personnel and equipment.
