ISLAMABAD: To commemorate 50 years of service by the Mirage aircraft in Pakistan Air Force and pay accolades to No22 Operational Conversion Unit and No27 Tactical Attack Squadrons for their meritorious services in war time role and award of colour to two operational squadrons, a ceremony was held Thursday at an operational base of PAF.
President Dr Arif Alvi was the chief guest on the occasion. Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, was also present on the occasion. Addressing the audience, the air chief said, âI acknowledge the vision of our predecessors for keeping the aircraft abreast to meet challenges of modern warfare through up-gradationâ. He further said, âOver the years, the Mirage aircraft has amply demonstrated its capability in 1971 war, the two-decade long war on terror; and recently during Operation Swift Retort. The decision to strip Belarus of host status for this May’s Men s World Ice Hockey Championship comes almost 50 years to the day after the first Hockey World Cup on grass was postponed because of fears that the competition would take place in an atmosphere of violence .
It was to have taken place in Lahore, but postponement came little more than a fortnight before it was due to begin. It was eventually held in October 1971 and staged 8,400 kilometres away in Barcelona.
The World Cup idea had come from India and Pakistan, then the two dominant nations in international hockey. Between them, they had won every Olympic tournament since 1928.
