The United Arab Emirates made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Arab nation, and the fifth worldwide, to send a probe to Mars.
Officials have lauded the symbolic importance of the mission, which they say will inspire a new generation of Emirati and Arab youth to begin careers in the sciences.
Yousef Al Otaiba, the country’s ambassador to the US, even called it “the Arab world’s version of President John F Kennedy’s moon shot”.

The Martian Space Race
UAE s space probe will be the first of three spacecraft to reach the Red Planet, with all three set to arrive within the month. The Arab nation launched its first space mission, together with China and the United States. All three countries took advantage of the time when Earth and Mars are at their closest point to one another last July 2019.

The Emirates Mars Mission, the first interplanetary exploration undertaken by an Arab nation, is scheduled to reach Mars orbit on February 9, 2021 at 8:41 a.m. MST (10:41 a.m. EST). The spacecraft will spend one Martian Year (about two Earth years) orbiting the red planet gathering crucial science data. A broadcast of the Mars Orbit Insertion event will be available on the Emirates Mars Mission website beginning at 7 a.m. MST (9 a.m. EST).
