Ames library presentation examines impact of 'ignored racism' on voting

Peterson said this was particularly relevant to the 2016 presidential election. The most vivid things from (Donald Trump s) announcement speech were his comments about Mexicans, Peterson said, referencing when the former president erroneously connected Mexican immigrants and crime. Leading up to the 2016 election, much of the discussion of voter fraud had emphasized Latinos. It was discussions of illegal voting, and mostly meant by illegal voting was immigrant voting, Peterson said. But during the 2020 election, Peterson said, narratives about voter fraud instead targeted cities with large Black populations. Trump pushed to invalidate votes in cities like Milwaukee, Detroit, Philadelphia and Atlanta, alarming civil rights groups.

Dallas ISD getting seniors on track to graduate after many fell behind from virtual learning

Updated: 5:25 PM CDT April 12, 2021 DALLAS With nine weeks left in the school year, the senior class of 2021 at Dallas Independent School District is finally back on campus five days a week. I miss my friends. I miss my teachers. I just miss that constant motivation that was around me, said Marquiese Henderson, a senior at Lincoln High School. He said virtual learning has been tough, and he is excited to do in-person class again.  Seeing the same four walls every day, seeing the same computer, it just makes you want to crawl back in bed, said Henderson. COVID-19 cases in Dallas County have dropped, so the district has reopened campuses to all high schoolers.

Dallas ISD Wants All Seniors Back In School To Improve Graduation Rates

Facebook The Dallas school district wants every senior back in class, every day, for in-person learning, till the end of the year beginning Monday. Too many kids have been missing out on instruction. With just nine weeks of school left in Dallas, the district’s Deputy Chief of School Leadership, Mark Ramirez, fears if nothing changes, too many kids won’t graduate. He said in the pandemic, many seniors suffered by learning online. The district says one out of every five high schoolers stopped attending class. Ramirez wants them back, learning face-to-face. “We know it’s going to be a challenge,” Ramirez said, “because they’ve been out of school a year and a half. And that’s why we want them back to try to get that (graduation) number as close to where we were in the past, which is getting close to 88% from the district.”
