Coco Gauff has withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19.
The 17 year old took to Twitter on Sunday (18Jul21) to break the news to fans, just days before the start of the Summer Games, which had been postponed from 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic. I m disappointed to share the news that I have tested positive for COVID and won t be able to play in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the women s world number 25 wrote.

Two South African footballers and a video analyst have tested positive for the coronavirus in the Tokyo Olympic Village, officials said on Sunday, raising fears of a cluster just days before the opening ceremony.
The cases further darkened a gloomy atmosphere around the 2020 Games, which will finally open after a year s delay on Friday but remain widely opposed by the Japanese public.
Players Thabiso Monyane and Kamohelo Mahlatsi and analyst Mario Masha are in isolation after testing positive, Team South Africa said, adding that the whole delegation had been following anti-coronavirus rules.
Tennis player Coco Gauff tested positive for Covid-19, ruling her out of representing the US at the Olympics and highlighting the challenges faced by the Tokyo Games less than a week before the opening ceremony.
Three members of South Africa’s soccer squad and a rugby coach tested positive in the Olympic Village – there are more than 55 cases so far tied to the Tokyo Games. Southeast Asia also continues to reel from a wave of infections, with Singapore reporting cases at an 11-month high.

South Africa’s Football Association yesterday confirmed Thabiso Monyane and Kamohelo Mahlatsi as the cases.
Video analyst Mario Masha tested positive on Saturday and the team is in quarantine pending more test results.
Another athlete from outside the village also tested positive on Sunday.
“We have three positive cases of Covid-19 in the camp here, two players and an official,” said South Africa Team Manager, Mxolisi Sibam.
“There is daily screening which included taking temperature and saliva testing, Masha and Monyane reported high temperatures and positive saliva tests and were then taken to do the nasal test, which we all had initially taken and they unfortunately tested positive for Covid through that test. Mahlatsi is the latest player to go through the same process,” added Sibam.
