weeks ago. so far, we know, that over 100 people lost their lives. others remain missing. and hundreds more are injured. and obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are suffering at this moment and all we can do is let them know that all of america cares deeply about them. and that we are going to do absolutely everything we can to make sure that they recover. well, for more on the recovery efforts now, we re joined by marie colby, red cross disaster engineer whose entire apartment complex was destroyed. good morning to you, marie. good morning. i mean, i know that you volunteer to helping others and yet, at the same time, you yourself now need some help, right? yeah.
my entire apartment complex is completely destroyed. are you staying in a shelter, then? pretty much everything is gone. yeah, i am. i m actually staying in the red cross shelter. so while i volunteer, i m also a resident there. oh, boy. marie, in everything that you ve seen, now that you find out that this is the most horrific tornado in the last 60 years, when you look around, does anything that you ve ever experienced or worked through compare to what you ve witnessed? no. really, nothing i ve ever seen is anything like this. i mean, it s just people that so many people that have everything gone and so much destruction everywhere i look. it s kind of overwhelming. looking at the pictures right now, i think this is the first time that we ve been seeing some of these amazing and horrific shots of destruction with everything levelled. i know that you haven t even been able to get anywhere near your apartment complex, right?
well, yesterday i was finally able to get up to my apartment complex. but it s actually completely unsafe to go inside. i was looking at my apartment, the roof is gone. there s walls completely drowned and there s no way to get inside without having risk of something falling and collapsing on you. you ve lost everything, marie? there would be no way for you to eventually get in there to get anything? from what i can see, it looks like i m going to be able to you out very little. as we look at the pictures, we know that last month, 300 people were killed in those did he have staying tornadoes that swept across the southlands here in the united states, marie. the difference is that was a lot of tornadoes. this one that hit joplin was one gigantic tornado that did all this damage and as people tried to go through the rubble over the last 24, 36 hours, the problem is the weather there has been stormy and i would imagine
