HENDERSON â A shooting on Monday left a man dead and Vance County sheriffâs deputies looking for a male juvenile they consider both âa person of interestâ in the case and someone whoâs armed and dangerous.
The incident happened in rural Vance County, in a small neighborhood on Cousins Lane off Fred Royster Road northwest of Henderson.
Deputies responding to a call found two women there along with the victim, 21-year-old Demonte Southerland.
Southerland was on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Sheriff Curtis Brame said he was later pronounced dead at Maria Parham Health.
Investigations have obtained a juvenile petition authorizing the arrest of the youth wanted in the case. But as of late Tuesday afternoon he remained at large.

HENDERSON â Another Vance County resident has died of COVID-19, even as more doses of the two vaccines that could slow the spread of the viral infection trickle into the area.
Granville-Vance Public Health officials said the latest victim, a 56-year-old woman, died on Dec. 21 at Duke University Hospital. She was the 67th resident of Vance County to die because of the coronavirus so far in the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Maria Parham Health CEO Bert Beard said his hospital received an allotment of the Moderna vaccine â one of two the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved on an emergency basis â on Tuesday.
