A record high number of law enforcement officers in the United States died in the line of duty last year, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Preliminary information in the organization’s 2021 Law Enforcement Officers Fatalities report showed 458 officer deaths last year, a 55% increase over 295 fatalities the previous year. Sixty-two officers were killed by guns last year, a 36% increase from 2020, the report said. Most of them were killed with handguns, and 19 died after being ambushed.
