and said we don t believe you, and we are joining the republican party and the trump team. john: the case of jacksonville at least and buffalo before that, charleston before that, racism unfortunately does still exist in this country. leo, great to catch up with you. thanks for kicking us off. appreciate it. sandra: former president donald trump will go to trial on march 4th of next year in the federal case surrounding the efforts to overturn the 2020 election. jack smith previously proposed january 2024 trial date but the president wanted it pushed back to april of 2026. david spunt has the latest. how might that start date impact the primaries? it s going to do it tremendously, sandra. donald trump is dealing with a legal schedule, his court appearances here and other courtrooms and the political schedule, so this is supposed to start on march 4th, 2024.
i m andrea mitchell in washington where a federal judge has set a trial date for one of the criminal cases facing donald trump, jack smith s election interference case will begin march 4th of next year. that puts it smack in the middle of the 2024 political calendar, just a day before super tuesday. judge chutkan telling the two sides at one point to take the temperature down, as things got really heated in court. the trump attorney arguing president trump is entitled to a fair trial, this is a request for a speedy trial. setting a trial date does not depend and should depend on a defendant s personal and professional obligations, mr. trump, like any defendant, will have to make the trial date work regardless of his schedule. joining me, justice and intelligence correspondent ken dilanian outside the d.c.
former president trump s trial date in his federal election interference case is new set. that trial will begin on march 4th of next year before setting the date, judge tanya chutkan said that she would not consider trump s personal and professional obligations and she most definitely did not. the trial will be starting one day before the super tuesday primaries. joining me now to discuss, we have national correspondent kristen holmes and also national politics correspondent eva mckend. i think of what you are doing the day before super tuesday and for all of these candidates, it is not like they are kicking back, right? what does team trump think of how this time line is shaping up? well, a couple things. they actually don t believe that this is going to be set in stone. i have talked to a number of trump advisors, they think it moves. they think with legal maneuvers and motions being filed, that he won t go on trial while running for president.
authorities have said there was a quote, armed and dangerous person on or near the campus. police have not said if there were any shots fired on campus or what initiated this lockdown. we ll bring you that information when and if we get it. turning to our law and justice lead, donald trump said he plans to file an appeal after a federal judge earlier today set his trial date in the federal case brought by special counsel jack smith where trump is accused staging a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election nationwide, joining us now to discuss is clint rocker, a former prosecutor in fulton county district attorney s office and tom dupree on george w. bush. the judge has decided march 4th of next year. what do you make of that decision? well it doesn t surprise me that the trump lawyers of a 2026 trial date was aspirational to say the least. and i don t think it was realistic.
