A variety of holiday-themed activities and events are scheduled for Friday through Sunday around the Houston region. Some are family-friendly, some of more geared toward adults, and some are free.

On the Friday, March 3 edition of Georgia Today: A massive new film studio planned for Albany is going elsewhere; Buckhead cityhood fails in the Legislature; and the legacy of suffragist Mamie George Williams. 

Marker honoring suffragist Mamie George Williams planned for Savannah

A new monument is planned to go up this May at the intersection of East Broad and East Henry Street in Savannah to commemorate suffragist and community leader Mamie George Williams.

FBCL to reopen area locations in June

Fort Bend County Libraries began the process of reopening numerous locations to the public in March, and several more area libraries will soon be joining them. A news release from the library system said the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch (8100 FM 359), First Colony Branch (2121 Austin Pkwy.), the Mamie George Branch in Stafford (320 Dulles Ave.) and the Sugar Land Branch (550 Eldridge Rd.) will resume in-person activities for patrons on June 4. Also reopening is the Mission Bend Branch at 8421 Addicks Clodine Rd. in Houston for mostly normal pre-pandemic operations. However, programming and events for children, teens and adults will remain online and in virtual formats.

Richmond food distribution adds evening hours

The Mamie George Community Center (MGCC) at 1111 Collins Rd. in Richmond is adding a food distribution session on one evening per week to allow easier access for low-income families. A news release from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, which operates Mamie George, said the free evening distributions will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. each Wednesday beginning May 5. The standard pickup times from 9 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and Thursdays are still available, but MGCC Executive Director Gladys Brumfield-James said the weekly evening window will give low-income and working families more access to needed food. “In many cases, individuals are working full-time hours but earning lower wages that won’t lift a family out of poverty. Many people with a minimum-wage job need help keeping their families fed,” she said.  “By adding the early evening hours, Catholic Charities can help families who can’t come to our usual food distributions held
