Grant County Farm and Livestock Bureau President Stuart Rooks and volunteer Michael Koury attach a sign to the front door of the 12-foot-by-21-foot greenhouse erected Saturday by the organization at San Lorenzo Elementary School in the Mimbres Valley.
The Grant County Farm and Livestock Bureau funded and constructed most of a 250-square-foot greenhouse at San Lorenzo Elementary School in the Mimbres Valley on Saturday with hopes of eventually building a similar one at every elementary school in the county.
※We feel like we can reach more people by providing these greenhouses in more urban settings,” said Stuart Rooks, president of the county farm bureau. ※Anything out in the rural areas we are certainly going to support, but we are looking at these schools and getting these kids interested in agriculture at a younger age.”
Mystery hole threatens Bayard well Written by Makayla Grijalva on January 12, 2021
With only one item to consider at their meeting Monday, aside from the consent agenda, the Bayard City Council approved the sale of several city assets at auction on Jan. 8 a car hauler trailer, a cement mixer, a 2001 Ford Taurus, and 2002 and 2008 Ford trucks.
The sale saw little discussion, and was approved unanimously.
Bayard Clerk-Treasurer Kristy Ortiz also gave an update on two projects at the city’s wastewater treatment plant dewatering and repairs to the influent line for which she is working to get approvals for funding.
She reported that she would meet with George Esqueda from engineering firm Stantec following Monday’s meeting regarding federal Community Development Block Grant funding for the influent waterline and the U.S. 180 lighting project.

※He was one of the last of the old-time country doctors that did everything deliver babies, did surgery, you name it,” said Jeb Fowler, Dr. Fowler’s son. ※I know he had a lot of patients over the years where he delivered them when they were born, and signed their death certificate when they died.”
Robbery, kidnapping mar NYE in Bayard Written by Makayla Grijalva on January 6, 2021
A quick visit to check on a vacant house in Bayard on New Year’s Eve ended in momentary kidnapping and car theft, according to a release from the Bayard Police Department on Monday.
No arrests had been made in connection with the incident as of Monday, but Bayard Police Chief Lee Alirez said that significant evidence was recovered from the scene, including a clear surveillance video from a nearby residence and several tips. He said he anticipates the case will be solved soon.
※It was an isolated incident it’s not somebody on the loose,” Alirez said, adding that the suspect was ※not a Bayard resident.”
