Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefele says Nigeria is targeting to attain self sufficiency in maize production by 2022.
Emefele made the disclosure on Thursday in Katsina at the launch of the 2021 maize wet season farming and first maize pyramid in Nigeria.
He said that the country has witnessed remarkable increase in maize production during the past six years with support of the Anchor Borrower Programme.
The CBN governor said that would be achieved through synergy between stakeholders and the resilience of farmers.
“This event symbolises our commitment towards enabling self sufficiency in maize production by 2022 in Nigeria,” he stressed, adding that maize was one of the priority crops under the anchor borrower programme.
Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele has urged youths in Nigeria to embrace agriculture, declaring the Bank’s readiness to support youths that are willing to engage in agriculture.
Mr. Emefiele made the declaration in Katsina on Thursday, May 6, 2021, during the unveiling of the first maize pyramid and flag-off of the 2021 Maize wet season farming under the CBN-Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) Anchor Borrowers’ Programme.
He expressed belief that Nigerian youth could leverage their talents, along with technological tools to improve farm productivity and delivery of agricultural produce to markets.
While noting that agriculture offered significant benefits for the youth, Emefiele reiterated that the Bank had put in place several measures to improve access to credit for youths interested in Agriculture under the Anchor Borrowers Programme and the Agri Business Small and Medium Enterprise Investment Scheme(AGSMEIS).

The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele has vowed to resist maize importation.
Mr. spoke at the unveiling of the first maize pyramid and flag-off of the 2021 Maize wet season farming under the CBN-Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, in Kastina, yesterday.
The CBN boss also urged Nigerian youths to embrace agriculture, assuring that the bank was ready to support them in the sector, according to a statement by the bank, yesterday.
He said that the CBN would resist attempts by those who seek to continually import maize into the country, noting that maize farmers in Nigeria had what it takes to close the maize demand gap of over 4.5 million metric tonnes in the country.

Governor of the apex bank, Godwin Emefiele stated this in Katsina State.
He said it was better for the country to strive to produce what it consumes instead of importing the same.
Emefiele said local production of what is consumed ensured teeming youths were provided with employment, as well as wealth generation for the country.
He spoke at the Ahmadu Na-Funtua stadium in the state capital, for the commissioning of the first maize pyramid in the country and the launch of the 2020/2021 dry season farming in the state.
The event, which was in partnership with the Maize Association of Nigeria, had the governors Jigawa Mohammed Abubakar and Kebbi state Atiku Bagudu in attendance.
Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State has said over 50,000 hectares of farmland were abandoned by farmers in the state in 2020 due to bandits’ attacks.
Masari made the disclosure on Thursday in Katsina at the 2021 Maize Wet Season Farming launch and first Maize Pyramid in Nigeria, NAN reports.
The event was organized by the Maize Association of Nigeria in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria Anchor Borrower Programme.
The governor, however, said despite the disruptions, farmers had recorded a good harvest.
He noted that the anchor borrower programme had impacted positively on the lives of small scale farmers in the state.
