The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is investigating whether mining activity or fluctuations in groundwater levels caused the earthquake that shook large parts of Gauteng early on Sunday.
The Council of Geoscience (CGS) says the Johannesburg earthquake that rocked the East Rand in the early hours of Sunday originated in the Boksburg area.
The Council of Geoscience spokesperson Mahlatse Mononela said that while they could not predict earthquakes, they do know from experience that larger seismic events may be accompanied by aftershocks.
