Embezzling land development tax: Khulna land official gets 3yrs in jail Star Online Report Star Online Report A court in Khulna today sentenced a land official to three years in prison in a case filed for embezzling Tk 99,056 of land development tax without depositing it to the government treasury. The convict is Begum Ayesha Akhter, deputy assistant land officer, said Bijan Kumar Roy, inspector (court) of Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) in Khulna. Zia Haider, judge of Khulna Divisional Special Judge s Court delivered the verdict in presence of Ayesha Akhter in the court, our Khulna correspondent reports quoting the inspector. The court also ordered the convict to return the embezzled money to the government treasury, in default to suffer her three months more in jail.

PRAN aims to collect 30,000 tonnes of cassava this season 243 DHAKA, Jan 6, 2021 (BSS) – The country’s farmers are showing interest to harvest cassava and local business conglomerate PRAN aims to collect 30,000 tonnes of cassava from farmers in this season. At this moment, about 2,000 farmers are now harvesting cassava under the PRAN’s contract farming. Cassava is a root crop which is planted in fallow land and hilly areas with a little cost and labor. In Bangladesh, the crop is popularly known as `ShimulAlu’, said a press release. Mahatab Uddin, Chief Operating Officer at PRAN Agro Business, said, “PRAN introduced contract farming of cassava in 2014. The conglomerate has been encouraging the farmers to grow the new crop under its contract farming,”

Photo: COLLECTED Star Business Desk Star Business Desk Local conglomerate Pran has set a target to collect 30,000 tonnes of cassava from farmers this season at a rate of Tk 8,000 to Tk 10,000 per tonne. Cassava is a root crop, which is popularly known as `Shimul Alu in Bangladesh, and it is planted in fallow lands and hilly areas with a little cost and labour. Pran s contractual farmers have harvested cassava in Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Tangail, Mymensingh, Jamalpur and Cumilla in around 5,500 acres of land this season.

Ex-PBCP man killed in drive-by in Khulna Our correspondent, Khulna Our correspondent, Khulna A former member of radical group Purba Bangla Communist Party was killed in a drive-by shooting Friday night in Phultala, Khulna. Mollah Hemayet Hossain alias Lipu, 45, was a resident of Tajpur village. He was killed when he was with several other villagers, police said. He was one of the 35 people, who surrendered to the authorities in the presence of the home minister last year, saying that they were willing to get back to normal life as law abiding citizens. Police arrested Faruq Hossain, 44, of Phultala, and Murad Hossain, 47, of Narail, also former members of Purba Bangla Communist Party, in connection with the murder, said Mahatab Uddin, officer-in-charge of Phultala Police Station.
