The historic phenomenon known as the Great Migration saw more than six million African Americans leave the South for cities across the United States at the start of the 20th century and well into the 1970s. This incredible movement of people transformed nearly every aspect of Black life, in both rural towns and urban metropolises. The impact of the Great Migration spurred a flourishing Black culture and also established a new cadre of artists, writers, musicians, and makers. With this project, the co-organizing institutions bring together a group of intergenerational artists with ancestral ties to the South to research and reflect on their personal histories and migration narratives through the lens of their contemporary practices.

A Black science fiction author who believed she could write better stories than those in B-grade movies, and a former NASA senior director who gazed at the stars while growing up in a remote part of Africa have been honored with Mars Perseverance sites named after them.
The names of
Jakob van Zyl, a brilliant engineer and manager who helped send spacecraft across the solar system, are now part of the Perseverance rover’s mission. Their names now designate where the rover landed and where it will watch the Ingenuity helicopter fly. There s a tradition for Mars rover teams to name their landing sites after someone they want to commemorate, says Kathryn Stack Morgan, deputy project scientist of the Mars 2020 rover mission.

The 2022 gubernatorial race in Massachusetts hasn’t quite begun yet, but one candidate is already testing the waters.
Danielle Allen, an author, political theorist, and Harvard University professor, announced Monday that she is exploring a 2022 campaign to be governor of Massachusetts. According to the state’s Office of Campaign and Political Finance, Allen filed candidacy papers Monday afternoon to run as a Democrat.
“We all have a role to play in putting our society back on a track that really distributes opportunity fairly, and if our elected officers are not delivering that, then we have to make a change,” the 49-year-old Cambridge resident said in a campaign announcement video, specifically mentioning issues like income and wealth inequality, food insecurity, education, and climate change.
