For McMinnville science teacher, extra training worthwhile

February 26, 2021 For McMinnville science teacher, extra training worthwhile Rusty Rae/News-Register## Laura Syring said she would like her science students to be able to conduct their own experiments in the classroom, rather than watching labs online. While they can use data from other labs in their calculations, she said, doing experiments themselves would help maintain their interest. Science teacher Laura Syring is one of several McMinnville High School educators to have taken additional training to teach the rigorous, college-level courses in the Advance Placement and dual credit programs. For several years, she has been offering a year-long environmental science class in which students earn both high school and college credit. This year she has added a biology course that carries dual credit through Mac High’s partnership with Chemeketa Community College.

Challenges, career programs encourage students to continue

February 26, 2021 Challenges, career programs encourage students to continue Submitted photos##Logan Shurts, Dane Foster and Cyrus Scarboro-Ford work on the robot their teacher designed for a recent competition. Robotics teams have been meeting in small groups at Mac High since fall. Cancellation of activities and in-person classes at McMinnville High School last year led to a decrease in students continuing to college after their socially-distanced graduation. Educators don’t want that to happen again. “It’s really a challenge to keep interest high” without seeing students face-to-face in the building, said Veronica Chase, an assistant principal at MHS. McMinnville’s elementary children are expected to start hybrid classes in March, but district officials have yet to decide when, or if, Grizzlies will return to the building this spring.
