India is gearing up to fight the disease – which, according to official data, infected 29.45 lakh cattle across 22 states and caused 1.55 lakh deaths in 2002 – by administering around 8 crore animals with goatpox and sheeppox vaccines.
Lumpy Skin Disease is a viral outbreak that targets cattle and has governments across India on edge. Research is underway to understand if it can transmit into humans.
The Delhi government on Monday started vaccinating healthy cattle to prevent the spread of lumpy skin disease, which has so far infected 571 animals in the national capital, officials said.
