USG Senate passes Kosher dining resolution, confirms Speaker of the Senate

April 14, 2021 in Featured, News The 141st Undergraduate Student Government Senate convened for the second time under the newly-established Areias-Warren administration at Tuesday’s meeting and passed its first resolution on Kosher dining.  Vice President Lucy Warren introduced the resolution, which was first presented last week by Benjamin Shiff, president of Chabad @ USC. The resolution focuses on establishing a University-recognized Kosher   the term used to describe foods that meet the dietary needs of the Jewish community restaurant.  According to the resolution, USC originally began a Kosher food preparation program in Spring 2018, where students picked up pre-packaged Kosher food at the University Village. However, the program proved unviable due to finances, the lack of attention over its existence and its inability to correspond with students’ schedules.

Areias, Warren, new cabinet sworn into office

April 9, 2021 in News, Sticky : Concerns were raised and discussed over the newly-appointed Chief of Staff, former Senator Max Gomez, after alleged misuse of his senatorial office during the 2021 USG presidential campaigns.  (Michael Melinger | Daily Trojan) Alexis Areias and Lucy Warren were sworn as the 2021-22 Undergraduate Student Government president and vice president, respectively, at Tuesday’s Senate meeting. Their tenure begins just over a month after they won the election with 53.9% of the vote.  Chief Justice of the USC Judicial Council Ben Morain also swore in the 12 newly elected senators alongside Areias and Warren.  Areias and Warren did not deliver an inaugural address, opting to share a video statement at a future date. When making the announcement for not delivering an address after being sworn in, Areias cited the length of the final 140th Senate meeting, which ran about an hour and a half.

(Nayeon Ryu | Daily Trojan) The 140th Undergraduate Student Government Senate introduced their final series of resolutions at the meeting Tuesday.  The resolutions will be voted on next week, in addition to the inauguration of the incoming members of the Areias-Warren administration. President Gabriel Savage thanked everyone for their commitment and ability to face challenges in the Annual Presidential Report given at the end of each administration.  “We got a whole lot of work done this year but the work of a good student government is never finished,” Savage said. “We learned about ourselves a lot as an organization: the good, the bad and the ugly, but we still have a lot more to learn.
