Longtime Lubbockites gathered together to welcome and recognize the new tornado memorial in downtown Lubbock on the 51st anniversary of the tornado that devastated Lubbock on May 11, 1970.
A dedication ceremony took place Tuesday morning near the site of the new memorial. Family members of the 26 people who died in the tornado were recognized at Tuesday s ceremony, and given flowers from the mayor and members of the Lubbock City Council.
Speakers reflected on the loss of life, those who were injured and the devastation to the community. Two tornadoes touched down on May 11,1970, and it was the large F5 tornado that had a destructive path lane of 8.5 miles and a width of 1.5 miles. The tornado covered 15 square miles, while the storm dumped three inches of rain and hail the size of grapefruits.

Lubbockites will again come together again to remember those whose lives were lost or forever changed 51 years ago on Tuesday, May 11.
But, instead of gathering at a newly unveiled memorial dedicated to the 26 people killed in the 1970 tornado, inclement weather again has the city changing plans.
Instead, the ceremony set for 10 a.m. Tuesday morning will be in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center - coincidentally also a memorial to the victims of the tornado.
There s a significant chance for thunderstorms and rain through much of Tuesday morning, with temperatures expected to hover in the lower 50s during ceremony time in Lubbock, according to the National Weather Service.

Hospice of Lubbock’s largest fundraiser returned, but with a different look and concept to celebrate its 32nd year.
Hundreds turned out for the annual Mayors’ Beans & Cornbread Luncheon fundraiser drive-thru event at the newly remodeled YWCA of Lubbock at 66th Street and University Avenue.
The luncheon is Hospice of Lubbock’s opportunity to raise funds to provide free hospice care to the unfunded and underfunded across the region. Hospice of Lubbock is the region’s only faith-based, non-profit hospice care available to both adults and children. It serves 19 counties in West Texas, according to a news release from the agency.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - A bank that loaned millions to Bart Reagor and his bankrupt auto group is now garnishing his bank accounts.
International Bank of Commerce is asking a Lubbock County Court to collect more than $23 million from four banks. Itâs filed against Bart Reagorâs accounts at Lubbock National Bank, AIM Bank, Wells Fargo and Prosperity bank.
In the request, IBC cited an April 2020 judgment against financial portions of the Reagor-Dykes Auto Group and Bart Reagor.
