'Leaves a lasting impression': ADAM – BBC Lights Up Festival (Online review)

Pop quiz! What do the words “qualified”, “critical” “enduring” and “original” have in common? The answer is that they are all contranymns – word which have more than one generally accepted meaning in the English language that to a greater or lesser extent contradict each other. Thus “qualified” can mean both skilled (a qualified expert) and limited (a qualified success); it all depends on the context. Such evasiveness of language is used to inform the writing of  Adam by National Theatre of Scotland and now showing as part of the BBC Lights Up Festival. This is definitely an “original” in the better sense of the word and explores the key question: “Can the soul of a man be trapped in the body of a woman?”

Filmed version of Scottish theatre hit Adam comes to the small screen

IN August 2017 the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) brought a play to the Edinburgh Fringe which wowed audiences, both with its subject matter and its staging. Entitled Adam, written by Glasgow-based playwright Frances Poet, and presented at the Traverse Theatre, the play told the real life story of Adam Kashmiry, a young Egyptian transgender man who had successfully sought asylum in Scotland. The production was directed by acclaimed dramatist Cora Bissett. The director of such powerful dramas as Roadkill and Glasgow Girls, Bissett had established herself as an excellent and humanistic creator of theatre about the real and diverse stories of trafficked people and asylum seekers.

Media release: Adam screening for BBC Scotland A MULTI-award winning production by the National Theatre of Scotland has been adapted for a special screening on television. A new and specially-crafted recording of Adam will be shown on the BBC Scotland channel in early March. Inspired by the life of Adam Kashmiry, Adam tells his remarkable story. Born in Egypt, Adam was assigned female at birth but always knew he was a boy, then as he reached adulthood had to flee from his homeland, coming to Scotland hoping to transition. Written by playwright and dramaturg, Frances Poet, and reworked for the screen, the hour-long drama focuses on Adam’s isolating experiences in a Glasgow flat while awaiting a decision on his asylum claim.
