Warm and snug: New Zealand's cosiest winter places to stay

Lorna Thornber05:00, May 02 2021 Brook Sabin We hope to inspire Kiwis to see more of our beautiful backyard, and give them an easy way to plan and book their trip. Whether you plan to get active this winter, hibernate or aim for balance with a combination of both, it helps to have a cosy spot to rest your head. Fortunately, Aotearoa is full of them. Lorna Thornber lists her favourites. Winter breaks can be about embracing the cold weather with skiing, snowboarding and brisk walks. Or they can be about hiding from it in a cosy cabin or hotel room with enough food, wine and entertainment on hand to ensure you never have to step outside.

Gazebos, road trips, and long-drop toilets: New Zealand summer memories

Four writers share the stories of their most memorable New Zealand summer holidays. The gazebo at Papamoa Beach By Kevin Norquay Memorable summer holidays? Ours at Papamoa Beach over a decade were so memorable daughter No 1 was moved to write a poem about them – entitled The Fight, it was about the only time she had witnessed her parents at war. Nearly as gripping as a Siegfried Sassoon or Rupert Brook in its portrayal of wartime horror, it is undoubtedly now in the Karori Normal School Hall of Poetry Fame. At the core of the marital strife was a malevolent gazebo. Green and white striped, with four legs and a peaked roof, it cast shade over the opening day of every holiday at Papamoa Beach Resort.

Five secluded New Zealand beaches to put on your radar for summer

BROOK SABIN Tunnel Beach is just outside Dunedin, and it s 72 steps down a hand-dug tunnel to get there. Throw in the towel … plus sunscreen and snacks – these secluded beaches are off the beaten track. From the Far North to the deep south, Lorna Thornber lists five of her favourites. Even with some 15,000 kilometres of coastline, New Zealand’s beaches can seem like crowded sandy cities when the sun shines. Fortunately for those who prefer a private beach vibe, there’s no shortage of hidden bays, coves and even huge swathes of sand that receive relatively few visitors – not because there’s something wrong with them (on the contrary, they are among our most unspoilt) but because they take time or effort to access.
