Business Owners, Residents Give New Fire Station Plan Mixed Response

By Karcin Harris & The Herald Journal • May 18, 2021 Several local business owners and citizens are opposing a plan for a new fire station that would replace a parking lot in downtown Logan. In minutes from the Logan Municipal Council Meeting on May 4, the proposed construction of Fire Station 70 was discussed with a budget of $325,000 and would be located on the corner of 100 East and Federal Avenue near the preexisting fire station, near Lucky Slice Pizza and Le Nonne.   According to minutes from the meeting, Craig Humphreys, assistant chief of the Logan Fire Department, addressed the issue of losing parking. Humphreys said while parking stalls would be lost, parking would be rearranged to maintain around the same number of spaces and more stalls would be added along Church Street and 200 North.

Firefighters battle blaze at vacant Logan apartment building

LOGAN – Fire broke out in Logan early Friday morning at a vacant apartment complex on Cole Street. Firefighters responded to the massive blaze at around 4 a.m. According to Fuji Williams, a captain for the City of Logan Fire Department, the fire marked about the fifth time the department has responded to a fire at the vacant structure. Williams said the cause of the fire is “definitely arson” because no power or utilities were turned on in the building. Both city and state fire marshals are investigating the fire. No injuries were reported. Anyone with information is asked to call the City of Logan Fire Department at 304-752-3601 or the State Fire Marshal’s Office at 304-558-2191.

Bear River Health Department switching to curbside vaccine clinics in Logan, no appointment necessary

The Bear River Health Department is doing away with its appointment system for administering COVID-19 vaccines and next week will start giving shots to anyone who shows up. Beginning Monday, May 3, the health department’s clinics in Brigham City and Logan will transition to offering vaccines on a walk-in basis instead of requiring appointments. The Logan location will also hold limited evening hours beginning May 10. The change comes as demand for the vaccine has tapered off over the past couple of weeks both locally and nationwide, prompting health officials to look for more effective ways to get shots into as many people as possible.
