1/1 A COUNTY man who became aggressive during an altercation with a man in North Berwick later tried to rob an elderly man at a cash machine while holding a knife. Ryan Malcolm, 29, shouted threats of violence towards Guy Thomson while in possession of a knife or similar implement at the town’s Lodge Grounds last year. Two weeks later, Malcolm then uttered threats to rob an 82-year-old man at the cash machine outside Tesco in Haddington. Malcolm looked over the man’s shoulder and looked at his PIN while shouting and swearing. Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that he made threats to rob the 82-year-old while in possession of a knife or similar implement during the incident on September 24 last year.
EAST Lothian’s Fringe by the Sea festival aims to return this summer, with new mini-venues announced in several popular locations throughout North Berwick. Talent from Scotland and beyond is scheduled to head to North Berwick for the 10-day event, which was cancelled last year due to Covid-19 but hopes to run this year from August 6 to 15. In a bid to achieve social distancing, festival organisers have announced plans for several outdoor venues, using sideless marquees or tents in places including the Lodge Grounds, Anchor Green, the Marine Hotel and North Berwick Library car park. The space at the harbour, to be called ‘Harbour Home’, is earmarked to host a variety of artists and businesses showcasing their creations and products.

During November, 13 calls relating to anti-social behaviour were made, with gatherings of youths – particularly in the Lodge Grounds – continuing to be an issue. Some of the incidents were: On November 6, police received a call concerning a man walking on Lochbridge Road with a laceration to his face. Police traced the man to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he was spoken to and it was established that he was assaulted. Enquiries are ongoing.
