As Covid-19 cases crossed 27,000 a day and an overstretched healthcare sector struggled to handle the growing number of patients, the state government on Saturday announced a complete lockdown across Tamil Nadu from 4am on May 10 to 4am on May 24. Chief minister M K Stalin said that more than 23 districts in TN had reported a positivity rate of more than10%. At least15 out of every100 people undergoing Covid-19 tests were found to be infected, state health department said on Saturday when TN added 27,397 new cases. The 241 deaths – highest so far – the state reported on Saturday pushed the toll tally beyond 15,000 and the cumulative case tally breached 13 lakh. In Kallakurichi district, the police said that 2,041 cases were filed as of Sunday for violation of prohibitory orders. The Cuddalore district police have booked cases against 168 persons for violating prohibitory orders issued as part of the complete enforcement of lockdown on Sunday.
In Cuddalore, the police booked cases against 168 persons under Sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of IPC and seized 100 vehicles from the violators.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday announced new restrictions, including night curfew from 10pm to 4am, to curb the spread of Covid-19. The new restrictions will come into effect on April 20. Sunday curfew would be implemented from April 25, a statement from the government said
Essential services will be permitted.
No public or private transport will be allowed during night curfew. Since night curfew is being imposed, intra-state and inter-state public and private transport too will not be operated.
Emergency healthcare, autos/taxis bound for railway stations and airports and essential services, including milk and newspaper distribution, will be permitted.
