Three parents who campaigned against New Jersey’s new standards for teaching health and sexual education and on “conservative values,” are now members of the Ocean City school board.
Four new Ocean City Board of Education members who defeated the incumbents in the November election were sworn in Wednesday night in a seismic shakeup caused by community backlash against the state’s controversial sex education standards.
Catherine Panico, Liz Nicoletti and Robin Shaffer, who ran on a slate, and Kevin Barnes were sworn in by School Business Administrator Tim Kelley during the reorganization.
There was also a change in leadership. In a 9-3 vote, Chris Halliday, who is in his first year on the board, was appointed president.

Eva Pianelli passed away peacefully December 22, 2020, with her family at the bedside. The middle daughter of Bernard and Ilah Rayder, she grew up on a farm in Stony Creek, New York. While attending nursing school in Gloversville, she fell in love with Vincenzo “Jim” Pianelli and embarked on a 65 year marriage of mutual adoration. They raised their family on Third Avenue in Gloversville during a time of great promise and opportunity.
Eva was universally loved and respected. She was one of the kindest and good-natured people one would ever encounter. Never a harsh word toward others, she maintained the highest standards in everything she set out to do. A gifted homemaker, she enjoyed reading, cooking and spending quiet time with family and Mountainview Avenue neighbors and friends.
