Police struggled to identify the swimmer killed by a suspected four to five metre great white shark near a popular beach after he suffered "catastrophic injuries".
According to the statement, officers who attended the scene, alongside Marine Area Command and Surf Life Saving NSW, found "human remains" in the water.
Several beaches in Sydney, including the iconic Bondi and Bronte, were shut down on Thursday after a swimmer was killed in a shark attack, the first such fatality at the city's beaches in nearly 60 years.
