Lake Utopia, in Charlotte County, is home to a unique pair of rainbow smelt subspecies considered to be endangered, and it's possible invasive pickerel are playing a role in their demise, researchers said.

It once teemed with millions of migratory fish. Then came a series of dams that blocked the fish from their spawning grounds, and years of conflict over river management.
