Children born to Chernobyl survivors don't carry more genetic mutations

Children born to Chernobyl survivors don’t carry more genetic mutations The largest and most advanced study of its kind not only updates past results, it also provides new details on how fallout from the disaster caused certain cancers. ByMichael Greshko Email On the morning of April 26, 1986, a reactor in a nuclear power plant in what’s now northern Ukraine exploded and burned triggering what would become history’s deadliest nuclear accident. The hellish fire belched out immense clouds of radioactive fallout that entered people’s lungs, settled on homes, fields, and livestock pastures, and infiltrated their supplies. Milk, salami, and eggs had becom

Children whose parents were exposed to Chernobyl radiation have 'no excess mutations'

Children whose parents were exposed to radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster have no excess mutations, a new study reveals.  Almost 35 years to the day after the catastrophic accident, researchers report a lack of trans-generational effects of radiation exposure from the blast.  The experts analysed genomes of children born to parents exposed to ionizing radiation after the accident, including those employed as cleanup workers. A second study published on Thursday, meanwhile, shows how exposure to the residual radioactive material caused the development of thyroid cancer.   The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986, at unit number four in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the Ukrainian city of Pripyat.
