The rand jumped to a 15-month high against the dollar as the country’s yield advantage and higher commodity prices boosted sentiment towards local assets, making it more likely that the Reserve Bank will be able to support the economy with record low interest rates even as US yields climb.

Workers at a Buffalo Coal mine in KwaZulu-Natal have staged a sit-in, with some underground employees refusing to return to the surface unless their demands for salary increases are met. The company announced in a press release on Friday that during the afternoon shift on April 8 about 130 employees at its Aviemore mine, located 4km from Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal, refused to vacate their work stations and started unprotected strike action.

The JSE was weaker on Monday morning, with global markets under pressure due to the threat of rising inflation. Meanwhile, oil rose to a one-year high after a series of drone and missile attacks in Saudi Arabia.
Brent crude oil price rose above $70 a barrel for the first time since January 2020, after an important Saudi oil site came under attack on Sunday. While such assaults rarely result in extensive damage, their frequency has created unease in the oil markets.
