Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers yesterday proposed amending the Primary and Junior High School Act (國民教育法) to have compulsory education begin at age five.
The Legislative Yuan’s Education and Culture Committee discussed the proposal and asked the Ministry of Education to deal with the matter.
KMT Legislator Wan Mei-ling (萬美玲) and 26 others said in their proposal that the enrollment rate of five-year-old children was 96.67 percent during the 2020-2021 academic year, indicating the nation’s readiness to accept that children of that age should receive mandatory education.

Lawmakers across party lines are proposing amendments to relax regulations on how city councilors use public funds to hire assistants, in an effort to prevent local council members from corruption and fund misappropriation that leads to self-benefit.
The Regulations on Allowances for Elected Representatives and Subsidies for Village Heads and Wardens (地方民意代表費用支給及村里長事務補助費補助條例) states that city councilors in the six special municipalities can each appoint six to eight assistants, with publicly funded salaries of up to NT$240,000 per month per councilor, and each assistant’s wage capped at NT$80,000.

Animal rights advocates took parakeets with them for a meeting at the legislature in Taipei yesterday, as they handed awards to lawmakers who are friendly to their cause.
The animal rights advocates were led by National University of Tainan professor of management Wu Chung-hsien (吳宗憲), who said they had brought seven parakeets to show that it is not just cats and dogs, but also many birds that are kept as pets in Taiwan, all needing protection from abuse.
