Horsetalk.co.nz Steeplechasing film puts spotlight on dark side of horse racing

A film exploring the mental health of jockeys and the “lonelier, darker side” of horse racing will air later this year.
The Fall, by British director and writer Nathan Horrocks, has been nominated for Best Short Drama at the London Short Film Festival. It will be screened during the LA Shorts International Film Festival, which ranks among the most prestigious and largest international short film festivals in the world, and has also received an honourable mention in the Independent Shorts Awards for Best Drama Short.
The 22-minute film is centred around the aftermath of a fall at the last fence of a race, where the horse, Habitare, would have passed the winning line in front had it not been for the fall.

A personal trainer who specialises in working with riders is setting out on a solo marathon next weekend (May 1-2) to raise money for two equestrian charities.
Former eventer and freelance groom Katie Bleekman will be tackling the 26-mile run for mental health charity Riders’ Minds and the Injured Jockeys’ Fund (IJF).
While many marathons have been cancelled because of the pandemic, Abbotts World Marathon Majors, which runs the world’s “big six” marathons, have been encouraging people to undertake “virtual” marathons, where they run individually wherever in the world they might be.
Katie, who is based near Cullompton in Devon, plans to run a route taking in portions of the coastal path between Dawlish and Exeter, setting off on either 1 or 2 May.

One For Arthur (winner 2017)
The 12-year-old was retired from racing in November 2020. He was in training with Lucinda Russell, and the son of Milan provided Scotland with only their second National win, when ridden to victory by jockey Derek Fox.
Rule The World (winner 2016)
The 11-year-old provided his connections and trainer Mouse Morris with a “fairytale” triumph in the 2016 Grand National.
He was retired quite young at the age of nine in 2016, following his big win. Although in good health when retired, the decision was made based on his previous pelvic injuries and that he deserved a happy retirement.
