Coming to an end. Everywhere you looked was on fire. Houses on fire, trees on fire. I was transported into a war zone. I just lost it. I hear my dad screaming, its here, run. You just got to push through. You do not stop. I said, please send somebody. And she said, theres nobody to send. It was, survivors said, like something alive a living, breathing giant that came out of the woods to hunt them down. The flames were so relentless, they burned for a month. So fast, they raced through roughly three football fields per second. Hi, everyone. Im lester holt. Welcome to dateline. It was californias biggest wildfire, one of the most brutal ever recorded. Tonight, youll hear from the people trapped in its path, how they ran for their lives against the flames, against the clock to escape. And it began in one of the most beautiful places on earth. It was perfect. It was our dream home. Its exactly what you want if you want to be away from a city. Its just so peaceful and so calming and just to
The officers approached carefully. If you rush in too quickly and you try to grab him half a second he could be over that and lose your grip and hes gone and you do want to try to be calm and bring things down. Mid span 140 feet up and he would look at them or speak. And he wasnt looking left or right, he was just staring straight out. And at the water and actually looking down. Reporter slowly they would try to connect as they will build trust and find common ground. As soon as he mentioned the kid, instant action. Reporter it helps that all of them are dads. Youve got to realize that youre not only doing this to youre, but to your kids and other family members. Joiner knows firsthand how a suicidal situation goes from calm to crazy. And that is him grabbing the man by the wrist as he dangles off the antioch bridge two years ago. We were able to get him back up and again and that is a very chaotic situation verses this one.
