the really bad missile tests that we agreed not to have. jillian: i think at the end of the day it s not going to just happen, denuclearization. [laughter] i think everybody pretty much understands that. we were just talking about this in the commercial break, you look at these big to-dos made of this. i personally think you could be more successful, perhaps, having mike pompeo at more of these type of lower level talks, have more of these, have them more frequently. they don t all need to be a big to-do, because then you have kim jong un walking away or president trump walking away, whatever the case may be, and it different have to be a constant media frenzy. just make progress. leland: that was sort of the bush/obama administration s look at this, which is that in order to get a photo op with the president of the united states, you have to do something meaningful and real. president trump reversed that and said, well, you get the photo op, and hopefully i ll get something decent out
they site these launches were not they cite these launches were not directed toward either countries. these tests are not entirely surprising given the north koreans increasing frustration with washington and seoul in the recent weeks over the lack of progress on the nuclear talks. you said the two leaders met last month and agreed to resume working level talks. nothing s happening. the north koreans seem to be getting impatient. they have done this kind of test in the past to voice their impatience and frustration. if that s indeed the case, we are probably not seeing the end of it given the increasing uncertainty on the future of these talks between the u.s. and north korea. steven, the president downplays it. these are short-range missiles, and a lot of theme have them. short-range missiles mean a lot more when you re within short range, right? south korea, japan, you mentioned that joint statement, are we hearing anything else from the other leaders in the
nuclear tests, there s been no ballistic missiles. there s been a lot of goodwill and there continues to be. maybe if anything, better. after today, better than it was even before. reporter: now the president saying that there s no rush. clearly, the president does have a time limit on his term. kim jong-un does not have that concern, so certainly kim jong-un is not feeling that there is that much pressure. this is interesting to see this historic moment, something that south korea and north korea have been heralding as a great step in the right direction. of course, it depends what comes next. potentially working level talks. we heard from president trump saying that they re going to put these teams in place, and within two or three weeks they could be negotiating. this is where they ve fallen down after hanoi and after singapore. after hanoi there was no agreement but there had been goodwill between the two leaders. it s when they get to the nitty-gritty that it becomes
president trump on restarting these talks with north korea and then get your reactionful. we just had a very, very good meeting with chairman kim, and we ve agreed that we re each going to designate a team, and the team will try and work out some details. and, again, speed is not the object. we want to see if we can do a really comprehensive, good deal. over the next two or three weeks, the teams are going to start working to see whether or not they can do something. very big stop, pretty complicated but not as complicated as people think. jedediah: what do you think, optimistic or skeptical? [laughter] i m, best of times, worst of times. i like the idea of teams, because they need working level talks. we haven t had them for a very long time, and that s the reason why there s no progress. now if kim jong un is serious, you re going to have the day-to-day talk with steve begin, the north korean envoy for president trump. that s a good thing. but at the end of the day, it s
korea. they just fell apart over verification every single time. interim deal is possible because two leaders want a deal. that doesn t mean it s a denuclearization deal or we re going to get there. hans, building off of what sue just said, what did the president indicate there on the ground in terms of sanctions relief? reporter: hans? maybe we lost hans there. janis, can you answer that question? in terms of sanctions relief, there weren t any particular that is were coming out of the details of the meeting that president trump had with kim jong- jong-un. sanctions relief is something that kim has been looking for all along. it s what he went to hanoi expecting to walkan away with. when he didn t, it led to a colossal breakdown. there weren t even working level talks. just a couple of months ago,
