As Manitoba prepares to reinstate Grade 12 high school exams in 2024, there is a growing debate on whether or not they are the right way to evaluate students. But the answer to that like in many exams is not an easy one.

New research out of the University of Winnipeg shows Manitoba teachers have struggled to cope with the demands placed on them compared to their national counterparts, leading to alarming rates of exhaustion.
Nearly half of Manitoban teachers (45.95%) involved in the study reported high levels of exhaustion, withdrawal from their students and significantly decreased classroom effectiveness.

That cohort made up the Red zone, or most severe category, among three groups that categorized five different trajectories among teachers, which also included Amber and Green. Manitoba saw a substantial difference in this most concerning category Red nearly 20% higher than the national average of 27.2%.
