Gov. John Bel Edwards (JC Canicosa/Louisiana Illuminator)
Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Friday that he vetoed 28 of the 505 bills the Louisiana Legislature sent him during the 2021 legislative session. That number includes the construction bill because Edwards used a line-item veto for some projects lawmakers approved. The Legislature can override any of the governor’s vetoes with a two-thirds vote in both chambers, and it appears that the Legislature, for the first time in modern Louisiana history, will actually convene an override session in the attempt to force its will into law.
Edwards promised early on during the session that he would veto any bill he determined discriminated against transgender people, and on June 22, he vetoed Senate Bill 156 by Sen. Beth Mizell (R-Franklinton) which seeks to ban transgender women and girls participating in women and girls sporting events.

Lloyd describes himself as an animal lover and dog owner.
âBut mine are trained,â he said.
He asked if other council members and the mayor fielded calls about animal noise and Mayor Kenny Stinson said he did. The call Lloyd received that prompted the discussion was from a resident being treated for cancer who has been prescribed rest. His neighbor has nine dogs and they were barking near his bedroom window.
âWe canât just sit idle and let them live in misery because thatâs what weâre here for, to create policy,â Lloyd said. âI just want to make you aware of this situation and to help our citizens live in peace.â
Louisiana legislators working to lift campaign finance limits on PACsÂ
Thursday, May 20, 2021
Candidates for office in Louisiana would be able to take unlimited sums directly from political action committees, under a bill that moved nearer to final passage Wednesday.
Sen. Ed Price, D-Gonzales, told lawmakers he sponsored the legislation to do away with restrictions on contributions that largely come from special interest groups as âmore of a transparency bill than anything.â
He says candidates trying to get around the limits have created multiple PACs of their own to accept the cash to help them with races. He says that makes it harder for the public to track the donations and see who’s contributing to a candidate’s election effort.
