CHAMPAIGN, Il. (Nebraska Athletics) – The Nebraska baseball team (13-5) trailed 5-0 to the Illinois Fighting Illini (8-10) after three innings, but scored 12 of the game’s final 14 runs to win the rubber match on Sunday at Illinois Field, 12-7.
The Husker offense produced a season-high 16 hits, including a season-high matching four home runs for the second straight game. The first four hitters in the NU order homered, including two-run shots from Joe Acker and Spencer Schwellenbach, as well as solo homers from Jaxon Hallmark and Cam Chick. Chick’s homer was an inside-the park home run, the first by a Husker since Hallmark hit a grand slam at Kansas State on April 2, 2019.

Cade Povich made his fifth start for Nebraska and was opposed by Nathan Lavender, who was making his first start of the season. Povich departed after 5.1 innings and was tagged with four runs (three earned) while striking out four. Lavender allowed one run on five hits and one walk over 4.0 innings, while striking out six. Povich sat down six straight to start the game and then got a lead in the top of the third when
Griffin Everitt hit his first home run of the season to start the inning, giving the Huskers a 1-0 lead.
Joe Acker then drew one of his three walks of the night and stole second base, but would end up being stranded. In the bottom of the third the Illini had two on with one out, but Everitt caught Jackson Raper stealing third to get the second out of the inning and following a single Povich escaped the jam with a fly out.

Cam Chick as part of a five-run outburst to take a 6-5 lead. The Huskers got the first two runners on after Steil singled and
Efry Cervantes was hit by a pitch. Acker’s sacrifice bunt moved both runners to scoring position before
Jaxon Hallmark walked to load the bases. Schwellenbach deposited Ty Rybarczyk’s 0-1 pitch over the fence in left for his second homer of the season. Chick gave the Huskers their first lead of the day moments later with his fifth homer of the season, a blast over the wall in center. The Huskers’ lead would be short lived, as Illinois came back with a pair of runs to regain the lead at 7-6. After loading the bases on a pair of singles sandwiched around a Husker error, McDonald tied the game with his third RBI of the day, a single to left, before Brody Harding pushed across the second run of the frame with a run-scoring single two batters later.
