[applause] he is the 67th attorney general for the state of new york and the first woman of color to hold statewide office in york in the first woman to be elected new York Attorney general. Previously, she was elected public advocate for the city of new york on the first woman of color to hold citywide office. She has served as a watchdog over new york City Government agencies and advocate for the most vulnerable communities. Her office passed numerous legislation including round baking law that banned questions about Salary History in the employment process. She successfully pushed the Largest Pension Fund to invest in ammunition retailers and fought in court on behalf of children and families. Prior to that, she served on the new York City Council where she passed the state housing act forcing landlords to improve Living Conditions in the
Of new york citys five boroughs. Were at a testing site on the campus of Lehman College here. Ill give you a sense of whats happening here. As we know now, black and latino americans dying from covid19 at much higher rates. The patients tested at this site, very diverse. Even the doctors at this site primarily immigrants themselves. This neighborhood around Lehman College, 78 latino. Unlike a lot of the testing sites weve been showing you, this one trilingual. They speak english, spanish and mandarin. Theres a substantial asian population. Every day they see somewhere around 600 people. Were told that one in two cars that come through, nearly 50 of people tested test positive for coronavirus. Were being very careful this morning not to show faces of drivers, of course, because of hipaa regulations. You can see the Health Care Workers behind me. They are donned in the ppe. Only ones to die. In about ten minutes to 7 00 a darkcolored vehicle pulled up to the West Entrance parking lot. There was a Police Officer, a police car there blocking that entrance. When that car pulled up and stopped, those officers began to exit their vehicle, and two men exited the darkcolored sedan. Both of them had assault rifles came around the back of the car, and started shooting at the police car. The Police Officer in that car began returning fire and struck both men, taking them down. Country that has made it tougher for some. And folks living in those communities, and especially young People Living in those communities, could use some help to change those odds. Its true of some Rural Communities where theres chronic poverty. Its true of some manufacturing communities that have suffered after factories they depended on closed their doors. Its true for young people of color, especially boys and young men. You all know the numbers. By almost every measure the life chances of the average young man of color is worse than his peers. Those opportunity gaps begin early, often at birth. And then compound over time becoming harder and harder to bridge making too many young men and women feel like no matter how hard they try, they may never achieve their dreams. And that sense of unfairness and of powerlessness, of people not hearing their voices thats helped fuel some of the protests weve seen in places like baltimore and ferguson and right here in new york.
